Managing Risk Beyond the Markets
At Maverick Thomas Capital, risk management is an important part of our investment and financial planning process. We believe understanding and managing risk is essential to making informed, long-term financial decisions.
Risk can take many forms, including market volatility, concentration, inflation, taxes, liquidity, longevity, and behavioral decision-making. We work with clients to identify and evaluate relevant risks within the context of their broader financial plan. Not all risks can be identified, anticipated, or eliminated.
Investing requires balancing risk and potential return within the context of each client’s objectives, time horizon, and risk tolerance. We evaluate portfolio positioning and changing market conditions as part of our ongoing investment process. Risk management does not eliminate the possibility of investment loss.
Not every financial risk comes from the markets. Inflation, taxes, healthcare costs, longevity, and sequence-of-returns risk can affect long-term financial outcomes. We consider these risks as part of the broader financial planning process and help clients evaluate how they may affect their financial strategy.
Concentrated positions can expose a portfolio to risks associated with a particular company, industry, or asset class. When appropriate, we help clients evaluate concentration risk and consider diversification strategies in the context of their objectives, tax circumstances, and overall financial plan.
Market uncertainty can make disciplined decision-making more difficult. Through ongoing communication and a defined investment process, we help clients remain focused on their long-term objectives rather than allowing short-term market movements or emotion to drive investment decisions.
As part of our planning process, we may use Nitrogen® to help assess the level of market volatility and investment risk you indicate you are comfortable accepting.
Your Risk Number® is used as one of several inputs when evaluating your investment profile and discussing portfolio positioning. It does not represent a limit on the amount your portfolio could lose and does not, by itself, constitute an investment recommendation.
Risk cannot be eliminated, but it can be evaluated and incorporated into thoughtful financial planning. We consider investment risk alongside other factors such as taxes, liquidity, longevity, concentration, and behavioral decision-making to help clients maintain a financial strategy aligned with their objectives as circumstances evolve.
